Right to Get out of Car Transaction (None)

Question: Is it possible to get out of a signed car lease within 72 hours of signing the lease? I leased a car yesterday. It has caused very serious family problems and I would love to get out of this if possible.

Answer: Illinois does not provide for any length of time to reconsider and cancel a contract for the lease or sale of a car. People think they have 3 days, but this is not the case. The only way in which you have a right to cancel a car transaction is if the dealer’s employees came to your house to get your signature (unusual but not unheard of), or if the dealer agreed to such a right (in writing, as a practical matter), or (sometimes) if there is something wrong with the car.
