Illinois law requires that a car dealer honor the advertised price of a vehicle. If documentary fees, tax and title are to be added to the advertised price, the advertisement must disclose that fact.
A study issued by AI car shopping app CoPilot based on about 500 used car sales during December 2025-April 2026 shows that a large proporation of the purchases were made for more than the advertised price plus documentary fees, title and tax. This is a violation of Illinois law.
In addition, dealers often represented that extended warranties or service contracts were mandatory. This representation violates the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act. If it is a condition of financing, it violates the Federal Truth in Lending Act as well.
The CoPilot study found that 1 in 4 buyers paid more than $1,500 in fees above the advertised price, while 1 in 8 paid more than $2,500 in extra costs.
