Credit and debit card receipts

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (“FACTA”) amendments to the Fair Credit Reporting Act ("FCRA") forbid businesses to print credit/ debit card receipts which include either (1) more than the last five digits of the card number or (2) the expiration date.  The purpose of the law is to prevent identity theft by limiting the amount of information that can be obtained from a discarded receipt.  The only exception is for old-style manually-printed receipts.

Some companies continue to violate the law. This may entitle you to $100 to $1000 per receipt.

You should regularly review your receipts to protect yourself against identity theft. If you have a noncompliant receipt, please contact us.
